Mixed Feelings | Abiba

Writer's picture: steppinintotomorrowsteppinintotomorrow

A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a soundtrack for tomorrow's days. Next up: Abiba, a Tilburg-based talented DJ and performance artist who challenges the lack of diversity in Western-dominated electronic music. In her mixes, she draws inspiration from across the Black music continuum and their abundant histories of communal celebration and community.

Every Mixed Feelings podcast is accompanied by a few questions that provide a little insight into the DJ and the mix they've prepared for us and for you.

Which feelings do we find bottled in this mix?

In a way, it is a sonic diary entry of mine diving into some bottled up feelings from the last weeks, revisiting some of my favourite tracks that I listened to a lot last year.

It's different shades of blue, it's different waves, or as Fitzgerald writes "And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." Or in other words, it's a poem about love.

What message does the music you play convey?

"How are you going to change the world if you haven't got the love?" (track nr20)

"We forget that we are souls. our stories live past today." (track nr14)

How is the mix reflecting your current music taste?

It shows my love for syncopation and polyrhythm, but essentially jazz and broken beat, various influences that shaped me throughout music and life, music for me always has been a remedy. Behind the decks, I try to share something that makes my heart feel a bit lighter and my soul dance.

Who should release a new album/EP already?

Frank Ocean.

What's magical about music?

Everything. It helps us to transcend time and space, to truly feel and authentically communicate. Music is love, music is light, music is a spiritual thing.

What is your main source for finding new music?

Bandcamp, 🏴‍☠️ *Pirate noises* 🏴‍☠️, DJs/Dancers/Musicians that I dig.

If the mix would be a soundtrack, what (kind of) movie/video/audio-visual content would support it best?

Akira.

Thank you Steppin' for the continuous support for myself and so many others. truly appreciate you <3
