A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a mix for tomorrow's days. For the series' kick off: Utrecht-based Ask Me Later.
"Steppin' Into Tomorrow struck me as a concept looking for timeless music; music that's fresh and new, but is firmly rooted in history."
"First of all, it's a great honour to be asked to do a mix for such passionate and knowledgeable music fanatics. Steppin' Into Tomorrow struck me as a concept looking for timeless music; music that's fresh and new, but is firmly rooted in history. This inspired me to make a mix filled with positive sounds and timeless music; hopeful about the future, mindful about the past. Starting off with a rendition of Mos Def's 'Time Travelling'; this mix took me through time and space. I elaborated on this theme by playing songs by musicians that studied their ancestors and are vocal about their roots. Young talents like Ranie Ribeiro, Kofi The Unknown, Vincent Paolo and Moses Boyd. Old legends like Donald Byrd, Waajeed, Dexter Wansel and Norman Connors. This mix is a reflection of my expanding musical taste: I'm always looking for new artists, forgotten gems and timeless classics I overlooked. On the other hand it's a reflection of those around me: DJ's that inspire me to dig deeper into specific styles or sounds. Musicians that inspire me to play their music and look for similarities in other tunes."
Who should release a new album/EP already?
KOFI THE UNKNOWN. He's been grinding for a decade, and has put out some looseys here and there. But he deserves to be seen for what he does. Labels, take notice!
If the mix would be a soundtrack, what (kind of) movie/video/audio-visual content would support it best?
Probably a mix between Space is The Place, Soultrain and Wildstyle.
