A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a soundtrack for tomorrow's days. Next up: Atsu from Tokyo, Japan takes the wheel on a journey through his divergent collection, filled with both very soulful, tender vibes and faster-paced electronic music.
Every Mixed Feelings podcast is accompanied by a few questions that provide a little insight into the DJ and the mix they've prepared for us and for you.
Which feelings do we find bottled in this mix?
This mix is a 1-hour package of my favorite grooves, making you feel the end of burning summer madness in 2023. If you give yourself completely to music, the vibe is crossing over timelines, like the sun to the moon.
What message does the music you play convey?
I DJ to deliver a beautiful soul and passion of musicians to listeners, in this mix, I play many records from my favorite Dutch producers alongside music from other sides of the world, and of course with some Japanese hidden jam. Also, I recorded this mix in my studio, inspired by the music played in Steppin’ Into Tomorrow’s podcast, putting different genres together like mixed feelings.
How is the mix reflecting your current music taste?
This mix definitely reflects on my love for piano, keys, and Fender Rhodes jamming groove in accordance with laidback and dance music influences, by vinyl. Some can sit back and listen, some can dance on it. I like to keep music enjoyable both physically and mentally.
Who should release a new album/EP already?
Insanely talented musicians I have seen live, I want them to release live recordings…
like Marcos Valle, Brian Jackson, Cory Henry, Hiromi Uehara, Ino Hidefumi, Takuya Kuroda, etc… Also I’d love to vibe with more great festival archives in high-quality sounds in vinyl.
For the album//EP, mixed genre music with killer tunes like something Theo Parrish would play in the peak time is dope. As a huge fan of crossover dance music, I am definitely going to check if some of these guys below release new stuff.
ex. Theo Parrish, Moodymann, Glenn Underground, Andres, Kevin Yost, Carl Craig, Rick Wilhite, Rick Wade, Maurice Fulton, Blacjoy, Karizma, Osunlade, Loftsoul, Timmy Regisford, Joe Claussell, Ron Trent, Mr.K, Scott Grooves, Dismantle, Nightmares On Wax, Mad Proffessor, Luke Vibert, Jazzanova, Atjazz, Cobblestone Jazz, Flanger, DJ Shadow, DJ Food, Madlib, Mo' Horizons, Dzihan&Kamien, Kruder&Dorfmeister, St.Germain, Incognito, BOOZOO BAJOU, Joe Arron Jones, Henry wu, Tour-Maubourg, Kid Sublime, Romare, Abase, Godrigez,Seba Kaapstad, Scruscru, Tooli, FloFilz, HNNY, Jazzbois, Bluestaeb, Melodiesinfonie, AGE, Ghost in the tapes etc…
…Just too many to name.
What's magical about music?
I feel music is magical when I get linked with people purely through music. It has been my best way to make friends no matter where I am. Also, it amazes me how music can paint our emotions with any color, with joy and energy, or with relaxation and healings. Music is able to move us from the inside.
What is your main source for finding new music?
Mainly physical record stores, friends, and festivals.
If the mix would be a soundtrack, what (kind of) movie/video/audio-visual content would support it best?
Festival archives with the sunset would be dope! or something like a time-lapse video starting from a sunny day with beautiful nature views, to speedy highways at midnight towards the city would be cool.
Btw, If you ever come to Tokyo, visit THE ROOM and TANGLE, my absolute favorite music bars in Shibuya. And Otsukimi for techno in Japan, also check out Bivsii, the best party in Leeuwarden!
