Mixed Feelings | Ays

A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a soundtrack for tomorrow's days. Next up: Rotterdam-based fresh vinyl collector Ays.

Every Mixed Feelings podcast is accompanied by a few questions that provide a little insight into the DJ and the mix they've prepared for us and for you.

Which feelings do we find bottled in this mix?

All the feels! Love, joy, and excitement.

What message does the music you play convey?

Every song has its own message, I think the connection is love. Love for music, love for someone, and everything that's related. The day-to-day cliches. This mixtape is inviting me, and I hope also you, to dance, so I think the other message is: Don't sit still, let's get loose.

How is the mix reflecting your current music taste?

I just started with collecting vinyl, this mix shows that I'm really into soul, disco, boogie, and funky music. This kind of music makes me want to dance all day, It's energizing and uplifting.

Who should release a new album/EP already?

My friend Jutta Daems aka 'Alison Jutta'. She makes dreamy synth-pop and has a crystal clear voice. Another piece of cake than disco, soul or boogie but really beautiful.

What's magical about music?

What's not? In my daily job as a nurse, specializing in pain and oncology, I see that music can be so comforting and be used as a pain reducer. Music connects and music is for everyone: young and old, all around the world. When you don't speak the same language music can bring people together.

What is your main source for finding new music?

Streaming services, social media, YouTube, and its horrible algorithm, Discogs & vinyl shops.

If the mix would be a soundtrack, what (kind of) movie/video/audio-visual content would support it best?

It would be a scene in a club with hundreds of people dancing together. With colors like red and yellow. And lots of lights, like the lights they have at beach clubs. That's the vibe I love.

It's a wrap! This is the first mixtape I've ever made and it means a lot for me that I get this opportunity to share my love for music. Thanks a lot for inviting me and I hope you'll enjoy this music as much as I do. Thanks to Bob Roche and Bobby van Putten for supporting me from day one.
