A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a soundtrack for tomorrow's days. Next up: The UK-born Utrecht-based selecta Garnett.
Every Mixed Feelings podcast is accompanied by a few questions that provide a little insight to the DJ and the mix they've prepared for us and for you.
Which feelings do we find bottled in this mix?
There’s a spectrum of emotion in this mix, from melancholy to euphoric with the aim to touch on all points in between to share an authentic and human emotional experience through the music.
What message does the music you play convey?
I tried to bring a sense of connectedness with our environment and the changes in color throughout the seasons. I recorded this back in August just as summer was coming to an end in Holland. The blue skies that we saw channel a feeling of hope and clarity but with a looming acceptance that what is experienced today is temporary, and tomorrow and the days to follow may bring darker shades. However, with gratitude, integrity and humility for ourselves and our neighbours there is a possibility to create constancy.
How is the mix reflecting your current music taste?
I’m a sucker for sweet samples, melodies, and percussive arrangements. The mix represents what I’m listening to whilst on the move so threw in a medley of Hip-Hop, Rap, Brazilian Jazz-Funk, House and Broken-Beat. I love the process of discovering common threads within different genres keeping my ears tuned for any bridges and cross-sections to jump to a new tempo and switch up sound completely. There’s a playful element to this and keeps you on your toes whilst curating an eclectic set (for lack of a better term.)
Who should release a new album/EP already?
K15 – the quality and consideration for each project he drops is unmatched in my opinion. His ability to convey truth and emotion through his productions leaves me waiting on the edge of my seat for the next one. A real connoisseur of music.
If the mix would be a soundtrack, what (kind of) movie/video/audio-visual content would support it best?
As I mentioned before, to me this is the sound of movement for me, a start to finish journey so I could imagine this mix could be a soundtrack to some kind of RPG video game, I feel like the tracks fold into one another to tell a story and you’re the main character. That or an anime film soundtrack, towards the end of the mix it gets a bit futuristic and fast-paced.
Wherever you choose to listen to the mix, I appreciate you. I hope it brings a sense of connectedness, familiarity, and warmth.
Love and blessings.
