Mixed Feelings | Kohei Hotta

A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a soundtrack for tomorrow's days. Next up: a vinyl mixed with strictly Japanese grooves by Kohei Hotta, all the way Tokyo, Japan. Kohei is part of GOW, who do their monthly parties at The Room, which is one of the finest venues for soulful music, founded by Shuya Okino of Kyoto Jazz Massive.

Every Mixed Feelings podcast is accompanied by a few questions that provide a little insight into the DJ and the mix they've prepared for us and for you.

Which feelings do we find bottled in this mix?

Old and new Japanese songs I have been listening to.

What message does the music you play convey?

Hope listeners can "musically travel without moving."

How is the mix reflecting your current music taste?

I have been digging into Japanese jazz and jazz in generals, there are too many good records from the past...

Who should release a new album/EP already?

Sade, Herbie Hancock, Q-tip.

What's magical about music?

You can connect with people from different age groups, race, ethnicity... I also love hearing music from country I haven't been before.

What is your main source for finding new music?

Streaming services, Bandcamp, Discogs, record shops, friends telling me their favs etc.

If the mix would be a soundtrack, what (kind of) movie/video/audio-visual content would support it best?

Maybe good for driving or running, it got some energy to it.

This mix was recorded at my home studio, all vinyl. Special shout-out to THE ROOM SHIBUYA, where I have been DJing for a while. I also included THE ROOM staffs songs, Shuya Okino (Kyoto Jazz Massive) owner of the ROOM, Yosuke Tominaga( CHAMP RECORDS/KAY-DEE RECORDS) manager of the ROOM, and last not but least Funky Bassist ROOTSOUL.

We do this party called GOW™ at the ROOM, past special guests include: FloFilz, Telemakus, Lucas Benjamin (Ghetto Funk Collective ), Vandorta (Sounds of Universe), Jamie Rosso, DJ NORI (tree), Daisuke Kuroda (kickin), Masaya Fantasista (Jazzy Sport).
