Mixed Feelings | Lefto Early Bird

A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a soundtrack for tomorrow's days. Next up: Brussels-based top selector Lefto Early Bird.

Every Mixed Feelings podcast is accompanied by a few questions that provide a little insight to the DJ and the mix they've prepared for us and for you.

Which feelings do we find bottled in this mix?

There’s a lot of different grooves in this mix, funk, disco, jazz and it’s all playing between 100 and 130 bpm. Most of the songs were recorded between 1976 and 1981 and for some reason I think you can hear it.

What message does the music you play convey?

The message is really personal and different from song to song I think, they are all beautiful, some are obscure ones but with a clear and bright message, and I find them spiritual at times.

How is the mix reflecting your current music taste?

This mix reflects different periods of digging, looking for new songs; times where you are into something very strongly, like Brit Funk for example, so you start digging deeper into the genre to find that one strong record you didn’t know you were looking for.

Who should release a new album/EP already?

That’s a tough question, I look for new music from new artists on a daily basis so I always hope that everything doesn’t come out at the same time, but there are artists I always expect to drop a record at any time; I am always looking forward to new music from Kendrick Lamar, the creativity has no limit when it comes to Kendrick. BADBADNOTGOOD are another bunch of friends I’d love to see an album drop very soon. Another Theo Parrish album or another Martyn record, always ready for these guys. You see, there are too many artists and too many genres to cover.

If the mix would be a soundtrack, what (kind of) movie/video/audio-visual content would support it best?

It would probably be a documentary on the nightlife in the late 70s, early 80s era. A documentary that would visit the clubs of different cities to discover the sound that was making people dance around that time. I can see that in front of me, but can’t put a title on that documentary just yet.

Thank you for finding time to listen to the story of this mix, I hope you’ll find whatever you are looking for hidden in one of the tracks. Sometimes music has the ability to tell you things that humans can’t. Enjoy and thanks for the opportunity, Steppin’ Into Tomorrow!
