A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a soundtrack for tomorrow's days. Next up: Amsterdam-based Belgian DJ and fresh label-boss Lil Lawaw.
Every Mixed Feelings podcast is accompanied by a few questions that provide a little insight to the DJ and the mix they've prepared for us and for you.
Which feelings do we find bottled in this mix?
For me all these tracks breathe a certain aspect of love and all the feelings that can come with it.
What message does the music you play convey?
This really depends on what sort of setting I'm playing. I have a deep love for everything neo-soul and R&B but you'll rarely hear me play an hour of the same sort of music in a live-setting. Lately, the few gigs I did have, had an incredibly cleansing effect on my mind and I played uptempo house and electro. I wouldn't say there is as much love in those sets, they were more pure party atmosphere with some pent-up frustration coming out in the form of some angrier music. I've recently started my label which I hope will be as varied as the music I listen to myself :)
How is the mix reflecting your current music taste?
This is the sort of stuff I can always fall back on, I'll never get tired of listening to tracks like this. My music taste changes with the weather and lately, the perceived freedom is also a big factor. When scouring Bandcamp I could be listening to smooth R&B and 5 minutes later I'm checking out some hard electro or techno.
I quite like to prepare for different settings when I'm home on my computer, just dragging stuff into hypothetical party folders in Rekordbox. Most of the time when I actually have a gig or guest mix coming up, it's quite easy to go back to these folders and compile a 'bag of records'. When just listening to listen though, it's mostly music like in this mix accompanied by Steely Dan.
Who should release a new album/EP already?
D'Angelo, D'Angelo, D'Angelo. I was tricked into thinking it was coming earlier this year, still hope it's coming sometime soon!
If the mix would be a soundtrack, what (kind of) movie/video/audio-visual content would support it best?
I'd say it would be a nice soundtrack to accompany a movie in the style of 500 Days of Summer, as it's got music full of love and hope as well as frustration, sadness and more in it. It's quite lyrical so you can hear this quite literally. Perfect for a stereotypical romantic comedy.
I recommend listening to the mix on a rainy day and if you like a track, please check out the artists' Bandcamp page! Tough times for everybody right now. Thanks a bunch for listening and let me know what you think!
