A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a soundtrack for tomorrow's days. Next up: The original UK selecta from Amsterdam Passion DEEZ.
Every Mixed Feelings podcast is accompanied by a few questions that provide a little insight into the DJ and the mix they've prepared for us and for you.
Which feelings do we find bottled in this mix?
After not being able to play in clubs for such a long time it's been such a pleasure to be able to play to crowds again. But this made me think - while we couldn't dance, a lot of the radio shows and podcasts I did were essentially club sets and now I kinda wanted to make a set for the home. So the layout and selection of this is typically how I would play for myself, at home. Almost an insight into how I navigate being a dance DJ who avoids playing house and techno. I have nothing against those sounds - I love raving to them - but right now I'm navigating this weird space within dance music with songs that you don't really hear in clubs. Towards the end, we do go up in tempo but I guess that's just part of the ride. Enjoy, welcome to a Passion DEEZ bedroom set.
What message does the music you play convey?
I play with bass and percussion mainly, this set doesn't really reflect that as these days I'm mainly playing jungle and broken beats. But this hones one in on more downtempo breaks that I'm fascinated with. As well as groove centric mixing, like matching songs that just happened to follow identical patterns but aren't necessarily the same genre or sound. I'm obsessed with the offbeat and how gaps between beats force you to find your own groove, I find 4 x 4 very limiting if I'm not already entranced so that broken beat to me, it's just so welcoming. As I move forward and release some of the stuff I've been working on I hope to express this too.
How is the mix reflecting your current music taste?
I think it shows how I'm very much digging from my peer's releases and songs that I would never really hear in clubs but sticking them together in an order that you would dance - even to a poem.
Who should release a new album/EP already?
Big H - We need a Fire and Smoke Part 2!
What's magical about music?
Groove is in the heart!
What is your main source for finding new music?
Social Media, YouTube and its horrible algorithm, Discogs, Radio & Blogs
If the mix would be a soundtrack, what (kind of) movie/video/audio-visual content would support it best?
A coming of age movie with city kids tryna find their way through late-stage capitalism
