Mixed Feelings | SEN

A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a soundtrack for tomorrow's days. Next up: The Utrecht-based Sen is part of the Steppin' crew, works in various programming, event production, and is an all-around music head who can be seen at many concerts, club nights and festivals. For his first mix he took us deep into the jazz rave realm!

Every Mixed Feelings podcast is accompanied by a few questions that provide a little insight into the DJ and the mix they've prepared for us and for you.

Which feelings do we find bottled in this mix?

I focussed on a combination of the joyfulness of jazz and the deep and warm sounds of club/electronic music. It’s supposed to feel warm and comfortable, but also exciting and unknown.

What message does the music you play convey?

It’s all about music with a soul, expression, intent. I try to discover and share the diverse sides of jazz and how it can be mixed with a wide range of genres. Music can be intricate, or even complex, but still be groovy and suited for dancing.

How is the mix reflecting your current music taste?

Many of the songs I only discovered recently while I was interrailing through Europe. I prepared a whole playlist of songs that I wanted to listen to and went from there. Especially Duran y Garcia, fragmentorchestra, the Amalgamation of Soundz and Conclave were heavily in my rotation. For this Steppin’ Mix I also wanted to play Makèz & LYMA, to represent the up-and-coming Dutch jazz scene. musclecars had to be there, because their new album is just amazing. And finally, ‘Modal Miles’, which was released by (and perfectly represents) record label Jazz-o-Tech from Berlin/Milan. They are pioneering a very interesting crossover of techno, heavy electronics, jazz and improvisation.

Who should release a new album/EP already?

D'angelo (but I could also go for a Mo Wrights album to be honest <3)

What's magical about music?

The power to unite, bring people together, create communities, let people share emotions and feel part of something bigger. It’s our universal language. Everyone understands it and is somehow connected to it.

What is your main source for finding new music?

Streaming services, Social Media, Soundcloud.

If the mix would be a soundtrack, what (kind of) movie/video/audio-visual content would support it best?

If I had the money I’d send a couple of dancers to space and film them dancing to this while the sun slowly disappears behind the earth. Something outer space for sure.

Because of the overwhelming options for puns or wordplay with my name I'm still looking for a DJ name the represents what I'm doing. So for now it's just SEN, but who knows for how long.
