Mixed Feelings | Stan Reijnen

A special guest-mix series where DJs are invited to create a soundtrack for tomorrow's days. Next up: Stan Reijnen, an up-and-coming DJ from Nijmegen, where he's currently resident at Blauwdruk. He's grown to be a familiar face at places like Paak Vinyl Bar en Open Source Radio where he blesses the listeners and dancers with fiery disco, warm soul and groovy house tunes.

Every Mixed Feelings podcast is accompanied by a few questions that provide a little insight into the DJ and the mix they've prepared for us and for you.

Which feelings do we find bottled in this mix?

Some tracks are darker, some are more hopeful, some are joyful. In creating this mix, I tried to guide the listener through different states of emotions, as life guides you through these emotions as well from time to time.

What message does the music you play convey?

I hope the mix is able to convey multiple messages, depending on how the listener currently feels and how they give meaning to the directions taken in the mix.

How is the mix reflecting your current music taste?

This mix allowed me to dive deeper into the organic and soulful part of my collection. Currently, I am really inspired by contemporary soulful cuts. So much good music has been released in the last couple of months/years that inspires me. Take for instance Natasha Diggs' Zora's Moon. It's so deep and soulful, yet very danceable. I love these kind of tracks (lately).

Who should release a new album/EP already?

Although their first album has just been released last summer, I already look forward to new stuff by Musclecars. You can clearly hear their sound is strongly rooted in the New York house sound, but it's refreshing as well. Can't wait to hear what's more to come from them.

What is magical about music?

Music has the special power to make you feel ways that other things can't. It can make you shed tears instantly, make you feel at unease or make you scream of joy. Also the magical thing about music is its capability of connecting people. Music opens up worlds :)

What is your main source for finding new music?

Bandcamp, Social Media.

If the mix would be a soundtrack, what (kind of) movie/video/audio-visual content would support it best?

I'd say the mix suits a movie in which the main character is guided through different states of mind or along different places. Sometimes the state of mind or place changes quite suddenly, sometimes it feels like the character is on a cloud which carefully brings them to the next destination.

To me, the mix in some way feels like a process of becoming. In the beginning, one is finding their way through discovering multiple paths (sounds). Later on, they find their ground in something more defined, more stable or grounded.

I hope U enjoy the mix :)
